it should have sane private and convenient defaults, like:
qwant, startpage, duckduckgo,
mojeek, brave search, yahoo
it allows proxy search results, not perfect though.
replaces [reddit] with redlib instance.
replaces [youtube] with invidious instance (rip invidious).

Vast majority of these are hosted at home, so I am much
more able to afford my servers to run,
have less financial instability and somewhat a little more flexibility
in some cases.
So the cost of maintaining is very low,
and I don't need donations to keep it up.
I'm willing to pay out of pocket for this.
